Astro Box Office (formerly Astro Showcase - not confused with the newer Astro Showcase channel introduced in 2021 which is formerly known as Showcase Movies) was a pay-per-view (PPV) system on the Astro platform in Brunei and Malaysia. It showed movies and occasionally sporting events.

History

[edit]

Astro Box Office launched on 1 February 2000 as Astro Showcase. At the time, it primarily carried movies.

Season Pass was launched on 1 February 2001, dedicated to showing sporting events.

On 29 September 2003, Astro Showcase and Season Pass were re-branded as Astro Box Office Movies and Astro Box Office Sport.

On 1 October 2008, the service added Astro Box Office Movie Thangathirai and Astro Box Office Movie Tayangan Hebat. Movies Thangathirai was dedicated to Tamil films, while Movies Tayangan Hebat showed other Asian and international films.

On 20 August 2014, Bollywood star Kajol launched Astro Box Office Movies for the first time in HD as Astro Box Office BollyOne HD.

On 2 August 2019, Astro Box Office Movie Tayangan Hebat and Astro Box Office Movies Thangathirai were upgraded to high definition (HD).

After 18 years of broadcasting, Astro Box Office Movies Tayangan Hebat ceased broadcasting and ceased transmission on 1 June 2021.

After nine years of broadcasting, Astro Box Office BollyOne HD ceased broadcasting and ceased transmission on 30 April 2023.

Content

[edit]

At launch, it primarily showed movies from around the Asian region and the world. With the launch of Season Pass, movies along with sporting events became the predominant content.

Films were first shown on Astro Box Office between two and four months after their theatrical release.
