On 21 October 2024, two passenger trains were in a head-on collision at Talerddig, Powys, United Kingdom. One person was killed and fifteen people were injured.
Accident
[edit]At 19:29 BST (18:29 UTC) on 21 October 2024,[1] two passenger trains were involved in a head-on collision at Talerddig, Powys, United Kingdom. The trains were the 18:31 service from Shrewsbury to Aberystwyth and the 19:09 from Machynlleth to Shrewsbury. A passenger was killed and fifteen people were taken to hospital with injuries that were described as not life-threatening or life-changing.[2][3] It was reported that the driver of one of the trains was able to warn passengers of the impending collision.[4] The collision was reported to have been a "low-speed" collision.[1] Photographs show that both trains were operated by Class 158 diesel multiple units.[5]
Response
[edit]The Welsh Ambulance Service, British Transport Police, Dyfed-Powys Police, Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service and a Coastguard helicopter attended the scene.[4] The A470 was closed as a result of the accident.[3] Passengers from the two trains continued their journeys by bus.[4]
