The Rabbit Fire was a wildfire in Moreno Valley, California, ignited at around 3:30 PM PT on July 14, 2023. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. As of July 22, 2023, the fire had burned 8,283 acres (3,352 ha) and was fully contained.[1][2]

History

The fire began near Moreno Valley in California at around 3:30 PM PT on July 14, 2023. As of July 16, 2023, the fire had burned 7,600 acres (3,100 ha) and was 35% contained.[1][2]

Eight days later, on July 22, the fire was 100% contained, with its final acreage being 8,283 acres (3,352 ha).

Cause

The cause of the fire is currently unknown and under investigation.[1]

Impact

Portions of California State Route 79 were closed due to the fire.[2] Evacuations were initially issued for areas north of Gilman Springs Road, Jack Rabbit Trail, south of First Street, west of California Avenue and the 79 Freeway. The evacuation orders were later extended to include the area north of the County Landfill on Lambs Canyon Road and West of Manzanita Park Road. A man was burned by the fire, who was either in or near a vehicle that caught on fire due to the wildfire.[2]
