Üsküdar University is a foundation university established in 2011 in Üsküdar, Istanbul, Turkey by the Human Values and Mental Health Foundation under the leadership of Prof. Nevzat Tarhan, who served as the president. The law concerning the establishment of the university was published in the Official Gazette on March 3, 2011, under number 27863.[7]

Founded with the title of "Türkiye's first thematic university", Üsküdar University welcomed its first students in the 2012-2013 academic year. In June 2014, the university graduated its first students.

NP Feneryolu Medical Center and NP Etiler Medical Center became part of Üsküdar University as of October 2011, forming the "NPSUAM Neuropsychiatry Health, Practice, and Research Center." In 2011, the Graduate School of Social Sciences and the Graduate School of Health Sciences were put into operation with the establishment of the university. The Graduate School of Natural Sciences was founded in 2013. In June 2014, 270 students graduated from the Health Services Vocational School after successfully completing the 2-year program. In July 2014, Üsküdar University established the Institute for Sufism Studies, marking another first in Türkiye.

Academic Staff

The Rector of Üsküdar University, under the leadership of President Prof. K. Nevzat TARHAN as the President of Supreme Council of Management, is Prof.Nazife GÜNGÖR. The university's academic staff includes many notable names such as Prof. Sevil Atasoy, Prof. Deniz Ülke KAYNAK, Prof. Gökben HIZLI SAYAR, and Prof.Tayfun Uzbay.[8]

History

At the beginning, NP Group opened the Turkish branch of Memory Centers of America on May 25, 1999, on Baghdad Street in Istanbul with the participation of the President of the Republic, Süleyman Demirel. Memory Centers, having accomplished implementing the "Brain check-up" and "Magnetic stimulation Treatment (TMS) (first in Turkey), continue to uninterruptedly offer new treatment methods in psychiatry effectively with its highly qualified, expert staff.[9]

Memory Center adopted relying on scientific measurements in the diagnosis and the treatment of brain functions dealing with neurological and psychiatric diseases, realizing one year later, the second stage opening of its Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Unit on October 3, 2000 with the participation of Wenon Wells, the President of "Memory Center of America".

In February 2003, NP GROUP put into service a five-story center for Adult Neurology and Psychiatry in Feneryolu, and allocated the villa behind it for young children and adolescent psychiatry.

Since November 2006, NP GROUP has been using functional and volumetric MR visualization techniques. Then on March 20, 2007, they established the first and the only Neuropsychiatry Hospital in Turkey, and began meeting the needs for an in-patient institution and with the participation of Bülent Arınç, President of Grand National Assembly of Turkey, inaugurated the hospital.

In June 2009, NP GROUP started the first Clinical Pharmacogenetic Laboratory in Neuropsychiatry in Turkey, and on August 10, 2009, established the service of Child and Adolescent Psychology and adult psychiatry at NP ISTANBUL Polyclinic at Etiler.

Üsküdar University has been officially established since March 3, 2011.[9]

Space Experiments and Üsküdar University

As part of the National Space Program led by the Turkish Space Agency, one of the 13 scientific projects carried out by Alper Gezeravcı at the International Space Station was the "Message (Microgravity Associated Genetics) Science Mission", developed by Üsküdar University's TRGENMER. The project, selected in May 2023, aimed to research the "identification of genes that are affected by microgravity, whose functions are yet to be discovered, and to determine, using CRISPR gene engineering techniques, which immune cells are directly affected by gravity in space missions."[10],[11]

Üsküdar University has 39 Research and Application Centers and 86 laboratories. Between 2023 and 2024, the number of publications indexed in international databases (SCI, SCI-exp, AHCI) was 2,364. The total project support amounted to 6.2 million TRY.[13]

The university's libraries collectively hold 86,475 printed books, 1,114,627 e-books, 68,422 e-journals, 3,187 theses, 70 video tutorials, 473 CDs, and 22 subscribed databases. The total library space is 7,974 m², with a seating capacity of 3,507.

Student Council

The Student Council is an official unit affiliated with the Rectorate and aims at meeting and improving the educational, health, sports, and cultural needs of students in universities while protecting their rights. It is not affiliated with any political ideology.

Student representatives at Üsküdar University are selected through elections. These representatives form the faculty student representative councils and the ÜU Student Council. The purpose of these units is to examine university issues, conduct research and evaluations on education, research, and student services, present the results to relevant units, and follow up on them.

Duties:

  • Identify the problems of students in higher education institutions and communicate their views and opinions to the relevant governing bodies of the institutions.
  • Develop social sensitivity projects in cooperation with civil society organizations and encourage student participation from the university in these projects.
  • Prepare social, cultural, and academic projects to make the university experience more enjoyable.
  • Work on student participation in national and international "Education and Youth Programs."
  • Develop reciprocal relations with national and international student associations and organizations.
  • Create working groups in areas such as food, transportation, housing, clubs, scholarships, education, sports, and culture-art, and ensure their cooperation.

Sports Activities

In the 2014-2015 academic year, in the inter-university competitions in which Üsküdar University participated:

  • In the TÜSF Muay Thai Championship, Muhammet TULGAR placed 3rd in Türkiye.
  • In the TÜSF Muay Thai Championship, Öznur BAYAT placed 2nd in Türkiye.
  • In the TÜSF Kickboxing Championship, Muhammet TULGAR placed 2nd in Türkiye.

In the 2016-2017 academic year, in the inter-university competitions in which Üsküdar University participated:

  • In the Türkiye Universities Taekwondo Championship, Ömer Faruk Kardeş placed 3rd.

In the 2017-2018 academic year, in the inter-university competitions in which Üsküdar University participated:

  • In the TÜSF Beach Korfball Türkiye Championship, the Korfball team placed 4th.

In the 2018-2019 academic year:

  • Visually impaired national athlete Fatih Bayer continued to be part of the national team by passing the European Championship qualification standards in the 200–400-meter races.

In the 2019-2020 academic year:

  • The Üsküdar University Men's Basketball team won all their matches in the Türkiye University Sports Federation (TUSF) 2nd League Group B and emerged as the group champion.

In the 2021-2022 academic year:

  • The Üsküdar University Men's Football team became the Türkiye Universities Sports Federation (TUSF) 1st League Istanbul Champions.
  • The Üsküdar University Men's Futsal team placed 2nd in the Türkiye Universities Sports Federation (TUSF) Super League.

In the 2022-2023 academic year:

  • In the Türkiye Universities Sports Federation (TUSF) competitions, Batuhan Seyran, competing in the 86 kg category, placed 2nd in the Inter-university Boxing Championship.

In the 2023-2024 academic year:

  • In the Türkiye Universities Sports Federation (TUSF) competitions, our Women’s Muay Thai Team placed 2nd in the Muay Thai Inter-university Türkiye Championship.
  • In the Türkiye Universities Sports Federation (TUSF) competitions, the 3x3 Women's Basketball Tournament team became the Istanbul Champions.
  • In the Türkiye Universities Sports Federation (TUSF) competitions, our Physiotherapy 1st-year student Tuğba Uzun became the Türkiye Champion in the 54 kgWomen’s category.
  • In the Türkiye Universities Sports Federation (TUSF) competitions, in the Muay Thai 75 kg category, our 1st-year Emergency and First Aid student Yaren Çınar placed 2nd in Türkiye.
  • In the Türkiye Universities Sports Federation (TUSF) competitions, in the Muay Thai 71 kg category, our 1st-year Physiotherapy student Rümeysa Sultan Yalçınkaya placed 3rd in Türkiye.
  • In the Türkiye Universities Sports Federation (TUSF) Kickboxing competitions, National Kickboxer Yaren Çınar placed 3rd in the Türkiye Championship held in Mersin.
  • In the Türkiye Universities Sports Federation (TUSF) competitions, the Üsküdar University Men's Basketball Team became the Türkiye Champions in the Universities Super League Summer Games.

Solution Center

The purpose of the Solution Center is to provide a reliable and easily accessible management approach to resolve issues for Üsküdar University students, staff, and other applicants who feel they have problems with the university. The Solution Center works in a result-oriented manner. It aims to help applicants reach the most accurate result in their university-related matters as quickly as possible, and for issues that cannot be resolved immediately, it follows up on the problems and suggestions on behalf of the applicant.

Accessible Life Student Unit

The Accessible Life Student Unit is responsible for ensuring that students with special needs due to disabilities at Üsküdar University can access all university facilities just as easily as other students.

The management of the Üsküdar University Disabled Students Unit is overseen by a Vice Rector appointed by the Rector of the university. The unit's main responsibilities include identifying the academic, administrative, physical, psychological, accommodation, and social needs of disabled students and determining what actions need to be taken to address these needs. The unit plans, implements, develops, and evaluates these actions. The operating principles and procedures of the Accessible Life Student Unit are prepared according to Article 8 of the Regulation on Consultation and Coordination for Disabled Students in Higher Education Institutions. The presidency of the Accesible Life Student Unit is held by Prof. Sevil Atasoy (Vice Rector). The unit is also known for its "Engel Savar" program, which has a pioneering role.

Continuous Education Application and Research Center

The Continuous Education Application and Research Center (ÜSEM) of Üsküdar University is an institution that works to make accurate information accessible, understandable, and usable. ÜSEM aims to open new windows in the lives of participants through the educational programs it offers within the university. It focuses on ensuring that individuals continuously and actively use their existing skills and abilities while providing opportunities to acquire new knowledge and integrate this knowledge into their lives.

Üsküdar University Television (ÜÜTV)

Üsküdar University Television (ÜÜTV) is an online television channel that broadcasts daily programs aimed at raising public awareness on various topics, sharing information in specialized fields, and more. It also helps students in the Faculty of Communication gain more practical experience in areas like camera work, directing, and editing, making it easier for them to be prepared for their professional lives after graduation.

The ÜÜTV studio is located at the Main Campus of Üsküdar University. Some of the programs aired on the channel and their content are as follows:

  • Health, Culture, and Art: A weekly show hosted by Pınar Güneş, an employee of the Health, Culture, and Sports Unit of Üsküdar University. The program features student club presidents as guests who discuss the activities of their clubs.
  • Elde Var Beyin: In this show, hosted by Prof. Sinan Canan and Asst. Prof. Dinçer Atlı, they have fun discussions on topics such as "How Can We Use Our Brain More Effectively?" every week.
  • Sport is Life: A program where the importance and value of sports are discussed each week with different guests.
  • Some Figures of Sufi Tradition: Hosted by Prof. Osman Nuri Küçük and Uğur Canbolat, this program invites individuals who have contributed to Sufi History and discusses innovations in Sufi thought.
  • Journey of High Consciousness: In this program, Üsküdar University students Nurefşan Tomaç and Gözde Eda Öz, along with academician Zülfikar Özkan, explore topics such as valuing life and being aware of one’s role in the universe.
  • Music Lab: A program hosted by Kaan Yılancıoğlu and Seyhan Karaman, members of the university staff, about the music world and the latest news in the field.
  • Positive Psychology: A program hosted by Fatmanur Erdoğan and Tayfun Doğan, where concepts like mental health, psychological well-being, and happiness are discussed using data from scientific research. This program airs every week.
  • My Guide: A program that provides information on the exams and professions encountered throughout life, hosted by Expert Psychological Counselor Ece Tözeniş and her guests every week.
  • Station: A weekly program where different guests are invited to discuss and understand the world of mind and art.
  • Film Frames Beyond the Frame: Hosted by Ayşe Kazancı, this program is aired bi-weekly and discusses the subtle messages conveyed in movie frames.
  • A New Day in Üsküdar: A morning program aired every weekday that covers the latest news in the headlines.

BrainPark

Under the Directorate of R&D and Innovation Policies (ARGEYEP) of Üsküdar University, BrainPark Technology Transfer Office and BrainPark Incubation Center serve as an incubation hub that provides support to young people in the fields of entrepreneurship and commerce, while also organizing training programs. These centers aim to grow the university's R&D, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship Ecosystem, increase the university’s R&D outputs, and facilitate the transfer of generated knowledge and technology.

Science and Idea Festival

Since 2014, the Science and Idea Festival has been organized annually at Üsküdar University, where high school students participate. The festival, which combines fun with science, aims to encourage young people to develop creative projects and conduct scientific research under the supervision of project mentors in the fields of Social Sciences, Science and Technology, and Health Sciences. The festival also aims to contribute to the development of multifaceted thinking and entrepreneurial skills. Prizes are awarded to the projects that rank highly in the festival.[14]

High Human Values Awards

Since 2016, the rectorate of Üsküdar University has been awarding the High Human Values Award annually to individuals who have contributed to society in areas such as Transformational Leadership, Social Empathy, and Contribution to Democracy Culture, becoming role models in the community.[15]

Üsküdar University operates three hospitals: NP Feneryolu Medical Center, NP Etiler Medical Center, and NPİSTANBUL Brain Hospital (Strategic Solution Partner).

Campuses

Üsküdar University has five campuses located in the Üsküdarand Ümraniye districts. The Main Campus and South Campus are located in Altunizade. The Çarşı Campus is in the center of Üsküdar; the Faculty of Medicine NP Campus, NP Health Campus, and Üsküdar Dental Hospital are located in Ümraniye. The Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences is located at the Main Campus; the Faculty of Human and Social Sciences and the Faculty of Communication are at the South Campus. The Faculty of Medicine is located at the NP Medicine Campus. The Faculty of Dentistry is at the NP Health Campus. The Health Services Vocational School and various departments of the Faculty of Health Sciences are located at the Çarşı Campus and NP Health Campus.

The Nakkaştepe Female Student Dormitory is located within walking distance of the Main Campus of Üsküdar University.
